Windy Hill Skyriders Inc. is a USHPA chapter that administers hang gliding and paragliding activities at Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, in Portola Valley, CA.
Windy Hill is a Northeast-facing paragliding and hang gliding site, and requires excellent pilot judgement and skills in order to be flown safely. It is the most technical site in the Bay Area.
Windy Hill is unsuitable for pilots who have limited experience flying in turbulent conditions and strong wind, who are unable to reliably execute spot landings with limited space, and for PG pilots who are unable to hike one to two miles with 1000ft of vertical elevation change with their equipment, in case landing in the LZ is not possible.
To fly at Windy Hill you must:
- Be a USHPA member.
- Possess a P4 and/or H4 (or foreign equivalent) rating, and a restricted landing field (RLF) skill sign-off.
- Be a member of the Windy Hill Skyriders club, that administers and insures the site.
- Possess a special use permit from the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD), which will be obtained by a club officer on your behalf once you join.
After thoroughly reading through the Site Guide, and before deciding to fly at Windy Hill and joining the “Skyriders” club, visit Windy Hill Open Space Preserve for a hike or bike ride, and familiarize yourself with the launch and LZ areas, and determine whether you feel comfortable flying there. If you do, register for an account!
